Samsung's collapsible smartphone is expected to cost 2,000 euros

In the smartphone market, Samsung is entering a new category of devices with a phone that can be folded into a tablet.

The device with the name Galaxy Fold is coming for the price of 2000 euros in May in the trade. In the summer, the market leader will also sell its most popular new smartphone, the Galaxy S10, in a version for the ultra-fast 5G data radio. Although the establishment of such networks in Germany is likely to delay, in particular, legal proceedings against the rules of radio frequency procurement, the telephone should also be available in Germany.

The Falt Smartphone has a rather small screen compared to current standards with a diagonal of 4.6 inches at the front. When you open it, you get a screen for 7.3 inch tablet.

Samsung announces that you can seamlessly switch between the screens of an application. If you open the Google maps on the small screen, you will see the same place during the unfolding – but in a larger section and with more information.

In addition, Samsung insists that network operators will use the device as a platform for their multimedia content. As a result, Fold devices could be generously subsidized, at least for expensive mobile phone contracts.

As of March, three more models of the new S10 series will be on the market, Samsung announced Wednesday in San Francisco. The novelty on the Galaxy S10 is, among others, a fingerprint scanner with ultrasound technology integrated directly to the screen.

The camera no longer needs only a circular cutout in the upper right corner of the screen so that the screen fills almost the entire front. At the back, the third camera has been equipped with a very wide angle lens. The phones can also charge other devices such as the new Samsung earphones or the computer clock Galaxy Watch Active contactless. All you have to do is put it on the back of the smartphone.

The Galaxy S10 has a diagonal screen of 6.1 inches, the S10 + model comes at 6.4 inches. The S10 + costs the most expensive version at 1599 euros – but has an integrated storage capacity in terabytes and a ceramic composite housing.

The cheapest version S10e is smaller with 5.8 inches and from 749 euros to have. Among other things, Samsung has given up the third camera lens on the back. The 5G model, meanwhile, has been improved beyond the ultra-fast data transmission with other features. This includes another rear camera for depth measurement allowing for better photo effects and augmented reality (AR) applications. The screen is even larger with a diagonal of 6.7 inches.

Samsung sees no problem in introducing the 5G phone to the German market before launching such networks. "It can change so quickly," said Martin Winter, director of Samsung, dpa. "It was important for us to be able to deliver 5G with a premium smartphone, and if the network operators are ready they will also use it." 5G offers tremendous opportunities for network operators.

Samsung is also involved in the network technology sector and provides equipment for a 5G test facility built by Telefonica in Hamburg. With its S series, Samsung enters the top segment of the smartphone market against Apple iPhones. Both suppliers traditionally present their best models every six months and compete for innovative features. For example, the new generation iPhone should have another camera in the fall and charge other wireless devices, as provided by the industry badyst, Ming -Chi Kuo.

Samsung and Apple have clearly been number one and two in the market for years, as competition from Chinese suppliers intensifies. Most importantly, Huawei has moved Apple to second place in the market after last year 's appliance sales.

The foldable Galaxy Fold "is completely ready for the market and we will definitely sell it on the German market in the second quarter," said Samsung's director, Winter. "Network operators are very interested in the product – also because they can read their content on the big screen."

Samsung had already introduced a prototype of the Fold last November and was now presenting the production model a few days before the Mobile World Congress. According to market observers, other suppliers such as Xiaomi from China could also present their folding devices.

Chinese competition has changed things, as Samsung's director Winter has also admitted. "We need to accelerate further development, move quickly, do not show prototypes, but go on the market." This applies to both the high-end market – like the Galaxy Fold – and the mid-priced equipment. In the end, consumers are the beneficiaries of increased competition.
