Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) is the latest carrier to announce plans to eliminate duty-free in-flight sales with an emission reduction target of 25% by 2030.
The decision follows a similar gesture from KLM at the beginning of the year. In a statement, SAS said:
"Duty-free sales have long been a popular service aboard our flights among pbadengers who have used it, but the buying behavior of our pbadengers has changed and sustainability has become more important than ever before – both for our pbadengers only for SAS.
"Withdrawal of duty-free sales will reduce the total weight of the aircraft, which in turn will reduce fuel consumption and emissions. Instead, SAS will develop solutions to provide pbadengers with more modern means of purchasing and receiving goods as part of their journey. "
The carrier said duty free sales will stop this fall.
SAS cites this decision as part of a broader effort by the airline to improve sustainability. Even though the airline has been wary of reducing its ancillary revenue by eliminating duty-free sales in flight, it probably has also weighed it down. cost savings from not having to carry duty-free items, many of which will remain unsold at the end of the flight.
Last month SAS announces partnership with Airbus for the development of electric and hybrid aircraft. The project will badyze the impact of terrestrial infrastructure and pricing on the scope, resources, speed and availability of the technology.
