HANOI, March 20 (Xinhua) – A dengue satellite prediction system has been set up in Vietnam to help curb the spread of dengue fever, local media reported on Wednesday.
Launched on Tuesday, the system, known as D-MOSS, uses a combination of satellite information, weather forecasts, and historical data on previous outbreaks to create an early warning system, up to the end of the day. eight months in advance, potential outbreaks, daily Vietnam News reported.
The D-MOSS is the first of its kind in the world based on Earth observation. It allows decision-makers to identify areas at high risk of outbreaks and then mobilize their strengths to reduce disease cases several months in advance.
The system will be implemented in Hanoi, in the central province of Khanh Hoa, in the central provinces of the Dak Lak highlands and in the south of Dong Nai province, for the period 2019-2021. It will publish the first forecasts in June.
Through the system, local communities will receive guidance on areas in which to focus their efforts to reduce mosquito breeding sites to prevent dengue outbreaks.
Vietnam has detected 26,200 dengue patients, including one death in the first two months of this year, according to its General Statistical Office.
