I am emotionally invested in Scary stories to tell in the dark. Growing up, these books were extremely important to me and helped feed the horror fan that I am today. The stories themselves were scary, but what really Stephen Gammell's nightmarish illustrations have been sealed. The strange and dripping art of Gammell is essential to Scary stories that it is difficult to imagine a film adaptation of books that works. Of course, he could perhaps capture the spooky spirit of the stories, but can a real action film recreate that art adequately? I doubt it.

Yet, there are many things on the Scary stories to tell in the dark adaptation to be excited. Guillermo del Toro co-wrote the script and is executive producer. And André Øvredal, who led the excellent The autopsy of Jane Doe, is behind the camera. On the basis of the images we have seen, it is clear that Øvredal and del Toro do not water things for their adaptation to the film. Of course, this can be aimed at a younger audience, but that does not mean that it can not also to be scary. Here is the official synopsis of the film:

It's 1968 in America. Change is blowing in the wind … but apparently, the small town of Mill Valley is apparently far removed from urban turmoil. For generations, the shadow of the Bellows family is ubiquitous. It's in their home on the outskirts of the city that Sarah, a girl with horrible secrets, has turned her tortured life into a series of scary stories, written in a book that has transcended time – stories which tend to become very real. for a group of teenagers who discover Sarah's terrifying home.

I would have preferred an anthology approach – something like Horror show or Trick or treats. But I'm really curious to see how it all goes. Scary stories to tell in the dark opens August 9, 2019.
