SCHALKE 2-3 CITY: MATCH REPORT
TIn-man City produced an incredible fight to beat Schalke 3-2 in the first leg of the 16th Champions League.
The Blues quickly took the lead thanks to 24 of Sergio Aguero.th goal of the campaign and seemed to go to victory until the hosts made a penalty in return with two penalties before the break.
Despite the loss of Nicolas Otamendi for a second foul at halftime, City has beautifully responded with two late goals – the first on a superb free kick by Leroy Sane and the winner on 90 minutes for a superb end of Raheem Sterling.
What happened?
The first goal of the city was a goal intricate complex game that ended with the pbadage of David Silva and Sergio Aguero seeing a head below Ralf Fährmann.
In fact, there was a real feast of free kicks and corner changes in the first 15 minutes, but the goal of the opening match of the Blues was due to good anticipation and a good reading of the match to the old.
As Schalke returned the ball to his goalkeeper, Silva quickly responded to his short pbad to the edge of the box and slipped the ball towards Aguero, who made no mistake after six meters.
It was about a minute before the goal was confirmed by VAR – but the next time it was used, it would be the Blues who would suffer.
The next important point of discussion was only discussed in the 33rd minute, when a shot from the edge of the area was reported. Daniel Caligiuri was deflected to the post by Nicolas Otamendi.
The Schalke players immediately claimed handball, the decision was sent back to VAR and after a five minute delay, the referee granted a penalty.
Otamendi has been booked and is missing the return leg and Nabil Bentaleb sent Ederson the wrong way to level the scores.
But if it seemed hard at half-time, the referee gave the Germans a second penalty. Fernandinho was judged to have shot down Salif Sane on a free kick shot in the box.
It was again hard for the Blues, especially as Bentaleb again beat Ederson on the field and Fernandinho was replaced, which means he will also be banned for the return leg .
What had been a very comfortable evening had been reversed in the space of 10 minutes controversial.
City began the second period with Kevin De Bruyne whistling a shot down a foot wide, then a good move between Silva and Aguero was countered by a thorough tackle from Matija Nastasic by the time Kun was on point to shoot.
But Schalke was resolute and organized and the Blues struggled through their defensive ranks.
Things got worse for City after 68 minutes when Otamendi was booked for the second time for a foul on Burgstaller and reduced to ten men for the last 20 minutes or so.
But instead of Schalke tightening his grip on the game, the Blues have beautifully beaten.
Submarine Leroy Sane equalized the 84-minute score with a 25-yard free-kick to silence local fans and give City a draw without a price – but there was still plenty to do.
Ederson – Is there a better goalkeeper in world football? – Pbades the ball 70 yards from Sterling's trajectory who holds his marker before returning home with a clever shot behind Fährmann.
It was a shortness of breath on the part of a team that never knows when it will be beaten, and this gives City a fantastic chance to qualify for the last eight of the competition – though, in light of this evidence, there is still a lot of work to be done.
What this means…
City has three goals on the outside and a 3-2 aggregate advantage to return to Etihad next month.
But the Blues will definitely be without the Otamendi and Fernandinho suspensions.
Star Man: Bernardo Silva
Non-stop action (as usual) of the Portuguese playmaker.
And after?
This is the small business of the final of the Carabao Cup for the Blues with a rendezvous Sunday at Wembley against Chelsea.
City will then face West Ham United at Etihad next Wednesday in the Premier League.
