The mansion from which the Rose family were evicted in the first episode of the Emmy-winning comedy Schitt’s Creek has been listed for sale for almost C $ 15 million ($ 11.8 million).
The Canadian sitcom tells the story of the fall of the wealthy Rose family from opulence and their attempts to restart life in the small rural community of Schitt’s Creek, a town that Father Johnny Rose bought in its entirety and then gave his son David as a joke during richer times.
The opening scenes of the first episode see the interior of the Rose family home, all the marble columns and huge chandeliers, stripped by officers from the revenue office after the Rose Empire’s CFO embezzled all their money.
The Toronto mansion that was used as this set, located on Fifeshire Road in the upscale St Andrews-Windfields neighborhood, is now on sale, priced at CAN $ 14,980,000.
According to the announcement on real estate site Zillow, the ‘single-family’ home features 12 bedrooms and 16 bathrooms, marble staircases, Sistine Chapel-inspired frescoes, and a sculpted limestone exterior.
The house would contain a wine cellar, a private cinema room, a golf simulator, a banquet hall and two swimming pools. It also has parking for 14 cars.
The asking price reflects a seemingly substantial drop: the same property was listed in 2018 for C $ 21,788,000.
Created by and starring Eugene Levy and his son, Dan, as well as Catherine O’Hara and Annie Murphy, Schitt’s Creek has been a slow success for CBC Television. What began in 2015 as a catch-all fish-out-of-water comedy quickly turned into a heartwarming story about acceptance, family and community, which found a dedicated international audience on Netflix following its launch on the platform in 2017.
The show was particularly praised for the nuance it found in its characters and portrayal of LGBT + identities and relationships.
It won the Comedy Awards in the 2020 Primetime Emmys, its sixth season was nominated for 15 awards and won nine awards.
