The Covid lockdown kept students away from schools for more than six months after the second wave, leaving them strapped to laptop screens. At a time when Covid cases are declining, several state governments have opened the doors to schools for students with strict Covid protocols and limited attendance.
While Haryana, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Lakshadweep, Puducherry, Nagaland, Chhattisgarh and Himachal Pradesh opened schools in the first week of August, Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh are ready to reopen from August 16, 2021. The UP government announced the reopening of schools. with 50 percent attendance for intermediate students.
While discussions about the third wave of Covid still swirl, some parents believe it is risky for children to go to school while some support the decision to start physical classes.
The government of Andhra Pradesh announced earlier in July that students could return on August 16, alongside the implementation of NEP-2020 (National Education Policy).
From September 1, Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan are expected to start physical classes for students in grades 9 to 12 with 50% capacity, with Covid-19 guidelines. In Tamil Nadu, teachers in public and government-subsidized schools have already returned. During this time, it is mandatory for teaching and non-teaching staff in Rajasthan to have received at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.
Even though Maharashtra announced the reopening on August 17 and issued a detailed SOP for the same, the government is now in two minds about it as the Covid task force is not in favor. Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad earlier announced that offline courses in rural areas would start for grades 5-8, and in cities, students in grades 8-12 will be allowed to attend school. .
Even though Karnataka announced the reopening of schools for 9-10 students on August 23, parents feared the move due to the low rate of fully immunized teachers.
Delhi schools were only allowed to open for senior students for practical and project-related work. While interacting with school leaders, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said most parents were in favor of reopening schools in comments recently received by the Delhi government. The capital has issued detailed SOPs for the reopening but has not officially announced a timeline.
Meanwhile, Gujarat will decide to reopen schools for grades 6-8 after August 15, only after carefully monitoring the Covid-19 situation in the state. The state opened schools for grades 9 to 12 last month.
