NEW YORK
US Senator Chuck Schumer calls on the Centers for Disease Control to declare an emergency and release special funds to stem a potentially life-threatening drug-resistant fungus that is spreading through health care facilities.
Schumer, the Democratic leader in the Senate, said that an emergency statement on the Candida Auris mushroom could allow his state of New York, his home country, to claim millions of dollars in response funds to public health crises.
More than half of the 613 confirmed cases in the United States were in New York. Illinois had 156 confirmed cases of fungus. New Jersey had 106.
The CDC has declared public health emergencies on Zika, Ebola and H1N1. Schumer says the additional funding could be used to boost Candida Auris testing and raise awareness.
