Wind turbines in Scotland generated 9,831,320 megawatt hours between January and June 2019, announced Monday WWF Scotland.

The figures provided by WeatherEnergy mean that Scottish wind power produced enough electricity to power the equivalent of 4.47 million homes for six months. That's almost double the number of homes in Scotland, according to the WWF Scotland.

"Throughout the country, we all benefit from cleaner energy, just like the climate," said Robin Parker, head of energy and climate policies at WWF Scotland, in a statement on Monday.

"These figures show that exploiting Scotland's abundant onshore wind potential can provide clean, green electricity to millions of homes not only in Scotland, but also in England," Parker added.

By 2030, the Scottish Government says it wants to produce half of the country 's energy consumption from renewable energy sources. It is also targeting a decarbonized energy system "almost completely" by 2050.

Overall, Europe is home to some of the world 's most ambitious wind energy projects. In September 2018, the offshore Walney Extension offshore wind farm in Ireland was officially inaugurated.

With a total capacity of 659 MW, it is currently the largest operational offshore wind farm in the world and able to power nearly 600,000 homes in the UK, according to the Danish energy company Orsted .
