Scrapie, an illness linked to mad cow disease, found in two herds of sheep in Alberta
Health Canada states that there is no known link between scrapie and human health
According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, sheep in Alberta have been infected with scrapie, a deadly disease that affects their nervous system.
The federal agency's website indicates that scrapie, which can be pbaded on to other sheep and goats, was confirmed last month by two Alberta herds.
Scrapie belongs to the family of diseases including mad cow disease in cattle, chronic wasting disease of deer and elk, and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans.
Health Canada says there is no known link between scrapie and human health.
The CFIA states that scrapie can only be found in adult sheep between two and five years of age and can take years to develop.
When an animal seems sick, it usually dies within a few months.
