Rawlings JuneJ Former President Jerry John Rawlings

Former President Jerry John Rawlings called for the removal of indemnification clauses that protect prominent political figures.

Rawlings made the call during his keynote address at a wreath laying ceremony, parade and durbar in Nungua, Accra, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the June 4th uprising.

According to Rawlings, many constitutional clauses do not serve the interests of Ghanaians.

He added that over the years, indemnification clauses had encouraged some characters to abuse their functions and make profits.

The former President said it was clear that many Ghanaians were losing faith in the country's constitutional mandate.

"The Constitution of the Fourth Republic was created by us, for us and to serve us. In the light of 25 years, it is absolutely necessary to reform or rewrite our current Constitution, "he said.

He said that a constituent badembly should be created urgently with the necessary powers to rewrite the Constitution.

Their work, he said, would involve the revision of all constitutional clauses, particularly problematic provisions such as transitional provisions, indemnification clauses, among others.

According to him, this would ensure equality before the law to encourage transparency, accountability and responsible governance.

According to the former president, the Constituent Assembly would optimistically embody the character of the Ghanaian people to craft a development agenda devoid of allegiances of blind parties and unscrupulous political promises.

He said that "our journey towards a developed nation should rather be rooted".

Mr Rawlings highlighted the abuses of ordinary people in Africa and called for an end to abuses by political leaders.

He said: "When we remember the recent image of the great and pious statesman, Pope Francis kneeling down to embrace the feet of" warlike statesmen, "in order to beg them to recognize and appreciate the value of the life and dignity of their own South Sudanese people remind us of the abuse of power of so-called leaders and shepherds everywhere. "

According to him, "Comrade Ibn Chambas could be inspired by his eminence and try to kiss the feet of some of the Chokosis, Konkombas and his own Nanumbas and appeal for peace."
