The party's national secretary, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, said the following over the weekend: "The National President of the Social Democrat Party (SDP), Chief Olu Falae, of GCON, is officially removed from his post. He communicated his decision to the party on Friday, January 8, 2019.
"Chief Falae, former Secretary of the Federation Government and Minister of Finance, motivated his decision for personal reasons, which was close to his desire to withdraw from active partisan politics.
"He had previously indicated his intention to retire at the age of 80, but he was forced to stay after the Party's 2018 National Convention.
"Subsequently, he again expressed his willingness to resign after the success of the Convention, but he was forced to stay to steer the party out of litigation emanating from his presidential primaries.
"It made him understand that as party leader, it was not good for him to leave the party amidst internal quarrels. So he stayed behind.
"In making this final decision, he recommended, in accordance with the Party Constitution, that the National Vice-President (South), Professor Tunde Adeniran, OFR, intervene as of Monday, January 11, 2019, as the de facto National President. . capacity pending ratification at the next National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting and National Convention thereafter.
"Professor Tunde Adeniran, former Minister of Education and Ambbadador to Germany, has extensive experience gained over many years in academia, the public service, as an intellectual and political party administrator .
"His arrival at the national presidency offers hope to vigorously reposition the party as a major force in Nigeria's political arena and as a credible alternative national party.
"It will support and build on the excellent work of the former national president while promoting the core values and ideologies of the party, which are centered on social justice, equity, human dignity, good governance and well-being of the Nigerian people. "
