The Women’s British Open 2021 was played at Carnoustie Golf Links, the classic seaside course that dates back to 1850.
The key word in this sentence is “seaside” – because you know there will be seagulls when you golf near the ocean.
Madelene Sagström discovered this firsthand when this bird tried to fly, or maybe eat its ball on the last round on Sunday:
According to USGA rules, the ball must be “returned to its original spot (which, if not known, must be estimated)” whenever it is moved by outside influence.
This is not the first time that a bird playing with a ball has been captured by cameras during a TV show. Here’s a classic example from the 1998 Players’ Championship. Check out what this seagull does to Brad Fabel’s ball:
Fabel, by the way, had the second ace on the 17th hole of the TPC Sawgrass, according to the PGA Tour, in the 1986 Players’ Championship. It’s a hell of a good career there.
Let’s finish with two more bird ball encounters, both from Pebble Beach. First up, here’s Colin Montgomerie innocently playing on the side of a bunker kinda close to an interested bird:
And finally, that of Phil Mickelson at the US Open 2019, aptly called by Paul Azinger:
