Newcastle boss Steve Bruce hopes to ruin the hopes of his former club Manchester United to recruit Sean Longstaff.
Bruce would have discussions with the Tyneside-born midfielder – with the goal of persuading the 21-year-old that he would be a key man at St James's Park.
Sky Sports suggests Longstaff take an interest in United as Old Trafford boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continues to rebuild with the British.
But Bruce is determined to stifle the transfer talks on his main badet in the bud, which would constitute a major statement of intent just days after leaving Sheffield Wedensday for his dream job.
Longstaff was ruled out of the Premier League Asia Trophy's 4-0 defeat against the Wolves on Wednesday night.
But the Magpies will try to bear up to 50 million pounds if Bruce is unable to convince him to stay.
Solskjaer has already landed at the right-back of Crystal Palace Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James' Ace, both 21 years old.
But he also wants to strengthen himself throughout the team.
