A 92-year-old Californian wanted to celebrate his birthday by giving back to military families.
Edmund Rusinek, himself a veteran of the Second World War, was left last Friday by his neighbor, Chick-Fil-A, and handed the manager a bundle of banknotes, reported the Orange County Register, as well as as airmen to explain his contribution. The director told the newspaper that she had burned the cash before Saturday morning and he had given her permission to use her credit card. "I guess I will know for sure when my credit card bill will be sent by post," he told the newspaper. "I am not a rich man, but I can afford it."
"Edmund is a hard-working customer," the restaurant manager Giola Arkis told the newspaper. "He always comes for a salad, cookies and coffee. We call it our adorable corner stuff.
Rusinek spent time at the restaurant on Sunday, taking pictures with families in uniform and chatting. Photos from Chick-Fil-A's local Facebook page show him, smiling, holding a package of receipts.
"I'm not a soldier, but I was eating that day and I heard everyone singing to him Happy Birthday !!!", writes Leslie Newbold on Facebook. "It was a sea of green everywhere over there !!!!!"
Many others wished him a happy birthday.
