The health and safety sectors are often interrelated in their attempt to solve public or global health problems; However, military involvement can have mixed effects. Security or military involvement reinforces public health efforts (such as badistance to the 2014 Ebola response and the 2015 Zika virus outbreak), but may also have adverse effects on health, such as the targeting of humanitarian and caregivers in conflict situations.
As countries are increasingly willing to involve the military in health, collaborative efforts between these two sectors need to be defined to support health priorities.
This series of two articles on Security and public health explores the relationship between the security sector and public health. The first document summarizes the various roles, responsibilities and approaches of the armed forces in global health and proposes policies that can help catalyze the contributions of all participants to improve global health. The second document in the series explores the link between law enforcement and public and global health at the global and local levels.
