The Ho Municipal Security Council closed the Ho Central Mosque for two weeks while the dispute over the position of the regional Imam is being resolved.
The lock covers the area surrounding the building; a decision according to the municipal police commander, Alexander Yeboah, was to prevent clashes between the two factions.
The site had been opened as the years-long litigation simmered, but following a recently failed attempt at peace, the Security Council decided to restrict access entirely.
Police had to rush to shut the scene on Friday, when supporters of Alfa Anas defied the order and went to the mosque to pray.
“We went there to keep the peace and ensure that the orders given by the Security Council and the regional police commander are followed.”
“The place must be locked to avoid a possible clash.”
The disagreement over religious leadership has divided the Muslim community in the regional capital and turned the central mosque into a safe area to avoid clashes.
Despite the lockout, a faction decided to observe their Friday prayers inside the mosque.
The case is currently before a Ho High Court, while both sides continue to claim the position.
The disappearance of the former regional chief Imam, Alhaji Umoro Danjimah Hamzah, marked the start of tensions, as a section of the community felt that Alhaji Alfa Hamid, who was replacing the deceased, should be allowed to assume the post of attaches until a new regional imam, Alhaji Muniru Ali has been installed, leaving room for sharp division and factionalism in Ho Zongo.
