SEHP support, Train 1200 women in quality shea harvesting

Samira Empowerment and Humanitarian Projects trained 1,200 women in quality shea harvesting as part of the first phase of the Shea Seed Initiative (SEI) in northern Ghana.

UTE is a livelihood empowerment program designed to equip women in the shea value chain industry with best practices in shea harvesting and processing. The project is being undertaken by SEHP in partnership with Ghana EXIM Bank (GEXIM), as part of its Grbadroot Initiative Development (GRID) initiative, designed to stimulate rural economies.

The first phase of the training focused on harvesting shea nuts safely and effectively producing quality shea kernels.

The trainees came from the municipalities of Wa, Gushegu, West Mamprusi and Kbadena Nankana located respectively in the Far West, North, Northeast and Far East regions. They are shea-gatherers who rely on shea harvesting as a means of livelihood.

Each trainee was provided with safety and protection equipment including: headlamps, gloves and rubber boots to allow them to pick the nuts safely. They also received pans to facilitate the collection of nuts.

The second phase of the project will involve the training of four hundred (400) shea processors and the commissioning of four (4) shea processing plants.

Mr. Bright Evans Darko, Head of Enterprise Development and Projects at EXIM Bank, Ghana (GEXIM), congratulated Her Excellency Samira Bawumia, Ghana's second lady, for setting up this project to provide women beneficiaries with the Shea value chain a sustainable livelihood industry.

He said GEXIM would continue to support local initiatives to increase cross-border trade and foreign direct investment from Ghana.

SEHP is a non-profit organization that has provided critical and timely interventions in the areas of women's health, education, and empowerment.
