At least 10 people were confirmed dead during two Friday weather-related disasters in the western region after torrential rains.
According to Graphic.com reports, five young family members, aged 17 to one year, were crushed to death in Ngyeresia, a fishing community near Essipong, in the metropolis of Sekondi / Takoradi.
It was after a huge tree fell on their house.
Police say 17-year-old Aunt Ama, 13-year-old Ama Dekye, Clement Arhin Jnr. 9, Emmanuel Annan 7 and Beatrice Amoah, 1, were declared dead on their arrival at the Essikado public hospital, where family members had rushed them in the hope of surviving.
The only survivor, 11-year-old Clement Arhin, receives medical care while the bodies of his siblings have been dropped off at the Effia Nkwanta hospital morgue.
Residents said the giant tree had been uprooted as a result of a rainstorm that lasted Thursday and that intensified throughout Friday.
Many residents were inside as the rains fell and, despite the intense noise caused by the fall of the tree and the destroyed building, relief was delivered late.
Police said the children's father, Isaac Kofi Amoah, confirmed that the children were home with their grandmother at the time of the tragic incident.
Collapsed building
The portal also said that in the same community, at least five people were confirmed dead after the collapse of a building.
Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan NADMO Director, Mr. James Obeng Jnr. who confirmed the incident, said the deaths had occurred when a mud house had collapsed on a family as a result of a torrential downpour in the area.
The capital of the West region was Friday, flooded by floods.
Areas such as Anaji, Effiekuma, Sekondi, Kwansarodo, Intankoful, among others, have been completely submerged by torrential rains.
The streets of the capital, including Bankyease-I Adu, the police district Effiekuma No9 and Anaji Choice Mart were rendered inaccessible by the floods.
The United Nations Global Assessment Report for 2019 warned of a dark future filled with harsher and worse disasters in the history of mankind.
According to the report, the rather scary future is largely due to random and speculative development and hostile management of the environment.
She cited global warming of 2.5 to 3 degrees above a pre-industrial level; a practice that has lasted for centuries, in total disregard of the consequences.
