Seventh-ranked Englishman Atherton Collieries surprised Asian giants Al-Ittihad in a friendly result on Wednesday.

Atherton Collieries, who will play in the first division of the North in 2019-20, defeated Al-Ittihad 2-0 at Alder House.

A header from Matt Grimshaw in the first half and a goal scored at the hour of play allowed the Colls to win against the eight times Saudi champions and twice Asian.

"I thought it was absolutely fabulous, I think, just like everything you work, and that the team has not changed much in terms of staff, we know what 's going on. we need to keep a clean sheet and we have really simplified it – work hard, keep fit, keep the distances close to each other and see where we are going, "said director Michael Clegg, via the Twitter account of the club.

"It was more like damage control, but as the game grew we grew up with a large crowd and we just made everyone very proud.

"I know it's pre-season and people think it does not mean anything, but it does mean something, it was a huge game and I'm just extremely proud."

Atherton Collieries have won three promotions in recent seasons and their friendly win was their pre-season premiere after defeats against Salford City and Chorley and a draw against Altrincham.
