State efforts take the form of two groups. Pennsylvania and Illinois have joined an effort by Connecticut to review existing allegations against Facebook and its protection of user information, although the report does not mention the nature of these specific claims. A second group consisting of New York, New Jersey and Mbadachusetts is investigating any other potential violations that have not yet been made public. North Carolina is part of a multi-state survey, although no additional details have been provided.

Once the details of the Cambridge Analytica data breach were revealed, the social networking giant was put under the microscope by several federal agencies. The FBI, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) all participate in an investigation of the Department of Justice on the company and its handling of confidential information of users. Some lawmakers have called for further scrutiny of the company as new revelations about seemingly lax practices in data protection have been revealed.
