PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – If you suffer from allergies and find your symptoms unbearable, experts say that, compared to other parts of the country, allergens in Pittsburgh are more important.

Itskowitz says some people with allergies may experience "a runny nose or an itchy throat," while more serious people may be "very symptomatic with extreme fatigue."
"I think the Pittsburgh area of western Pennsylvania has more people with serious allergies than others in the country," said Itskowitz. "I think it has to do with the quality of the air here. We know that the air quality is not as good as in other parts of the country. "
The American Foundation Against Asthma and Allergies ranked Pittsburgh 41st of the 100 largest metropolitan areas in the country among the largest projected pollen projections this year.
Experts also say that plants that sleep longer after a vigorous winter will come back quickly and effectively.
"Mold allergens tend to worsen when there is more moisture in the air. In general, trees and grbad will be more vigorous, "said Itskowitz.
According to doctors, many medications can take up to two weeks to reach their full effectiveness. So start taking them now before the peak season of April and treatment and testing are normally required.
"We are either treated empirically with what we call antihistamines and nasal steroids, or we can send them for allergy testing," said Itskowitz. "There are different types of allergy tests. There are blood tests, there are skin tests, depending on the type of allergy we are looking at. "
Doctors say that if allergies get you tired or prevent you from going to school or work, it's time to do this combination of treatment and testing.
