CONCORD, N.H. – Senators from New Hampshire, Jeanne Shaheen and Maine, Susan Collins, introduced legislation to expand Medicare coverage for diabetes management.

The bill would allow diabetes educators to help Medicare patients learn how to manage their blood sugar levels, maintain a healthy weight, eat healthy foods and manage their insulin levels.

Shaheen, a Democrat, said the training reduced the health risks of diabetes. Collins, a Republican, said it would reduce the cost of health care by preventing health complications and avoiding hospitalizations.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention predict that nearly 26 million Americans have diabetes and that 79 million others have pre-diabetes, a disease known to progress to diabetes without early intervention.
