Shane Warne named his Male Test Team of the Decade – but there is one massive and massive omission.
Following the International Cricket Council (ICC) awards, where the sport’s governing body announced its own Team of the Decade, Australian icon Warne decided to join in the fun.
After seeing the list of all eleven ICC players, Australia’s biggest wicket-taker named his own.
And while much of it stays the same, there’s a big difference that sticks out like a sore thumb.
Australians David Warner and Steve Smith made both teams, but it was a whole different story for our English rivals.
The ICC has named Ben Stokes and Alastair Cook to their Test of the Decade Team.
As for Warnie’s team, Cook was nowhere to be found.
During his career, the former England captain made 161 Test level appearances for the Three Lions and had a batting average of 45.4 over his 12,472 total runs and 33 centuries.
Instead, Warnie opted for South African icon Jacques Kallis.
But in explaining his decision, Warne argued that it wasn’t about ditching Cook, but rather leaving out one of the greatest all-rounders to ever grace the game.
“I looked at all the numbers and stats and I was like ‘you know what, you can’t just leave Jacques Kallis’ out’,” Warne told Fox Cricket.
“He has a record very similar to our own Ricky Ponting, who is one of the greatest drummers of all time. How can he not be on the side?
“And if you also add 290 test wickets, he’s a very handy cricketer.
“I moved Sangakkara to open because you’re not going to move (Kane) Williamson, (Virat) Kohli or (Steve) Smith. Unfortunately, Alastair Cook must be missing.
“When you look at the side, does that look on a stronger side with Kallis than the first one? Yes, that’s what I chose.”
