TODAY, the whole country, and probably the whole world, is paying tribute to former incumbent president, Nelson Mandela.
Known as Mandela Day, Mandela's birth day, millions of people take 67 minutes of their time to do good things for the less fortunate – a campaign that Mandela launched during his lifetime.
In the true spirit of "Ubuntu"Echo has been entertained with readers who share a birthday with Mandela.
Mzikayise Dube of Imbali said that he felt honored to share a birthday with Mandela. He said that while growing up, his friends called him Mandela and they even changed Mandela Day into 'Mzi and Mandela Day'.
"It's special because I share a birthday with a legend like Mandela and it also gives me the impression of a legend.
"To be born that day also motivated and inspired me, because I want to follow Madiba's footsteps," he said.
Thabani Majola of Mpophomeni said that even though he does not usually celebrate his birthday because of his work, the only positive point of his birth that day is that most people can not forget that it's his birthday.
"Once people started seeing and watching Mandela's birthday stories before July 18, they remember it was also my birthday. If I was not born that day, most people would forget my birthday, "he laughed.
"It's all thanks to the legendary Madiba that I'm not forgotten."
However, not everyone is happy to share his birthday with such an accomplished leader.
Ntokozo Hadebe of Edendale thinks the opposite and says that his special day is "hijacked" by Mandela Day. He said his loved ones were only focusing on Mandela Day and that they were forgetting him.
"I feel excluded on my birthday. Sometimes people will even forget that it's my birthday because they focus more on Mandela Day.
"They will remember later that it was also my birthday," he said.
Edendale's Londi Sibiya said she considered her birthday and Mandela Day as a very special day.
"I consider myself very lucky to be born with our hero. It also works in my favor because no one forgets my birthday, even my old friends call me Mandela's day. Other people even call me Mandela's daughter and that makes me so happy.
"When I was growing up, there was a Boxer store that gave birthday cakes to everyone who shared a birthday with Mandela. Every year, I badured myself to go there to get the cake for free, "she said.
