I was pretty excited to see the DC Shazam! Judging by the trailers, it seemed like it would be a movie full of fun and comic action. For the most part, that was it, but damn it … it also dealt with some heavy and very sad dramatic elements.
In fact, I was surprised by how the story unfolded. I really did not expect it to go in the direction he went. I thought the story and the dark elements that were embedded in it were satisfying, but my biggest problem with the movie was that it was marketed as a light and fun action movie. I felt that marketing was preparing me to really like the main character Billy Batson (Asher Angel), but for most of the movie, he was a bully and a fool and I did not care at all about the character. Not even when he was Shazam! (Zachary Levi). I understand that the character has struggled to grow in the story, but he was such an idiot and he certainly did not look like the pure-hearted person who should have badumed the mantle of Shazam!
As for Mark StrongDr. Thaddeus Sivana, his naughty character, has a tragic story and I understand why this has led him to become the kind of villain he has become. God, he looked like a much better kid than Billy Baston, but the magician who was trying to give his powers to someone was a donkey for him. His experience with the wizard completely transformed his life into a worse one and triggered the events that would turn him into a villain.
For me, the best part of the movie Freddy Freeman (Jack Dylan Grazer), The friend of Billy Batson, to whom Batson is a complete aside. Freeman was the most interesting character for me in the movie and he was easily the most entertaining. This is the character on which I always rooted the one who really deserved to be a superhero, and in a way, but he did not need to be empowered to be one. He was just a man of heart, with a great sense of humor.
Look, Shazam! was a great movie, with a story, a storyline and a solid direction from David S. Sandberg! There were great moments in the film and I dug out the tone and the visual style. And while I laughed many times throughout the movie with my daughter, it was just not what I expected from the trailers we had before it was released . I was expecting a lighter fun and comedy, but it has penetrated a heartbreaking territory that children like my daughter could suffer.
My favorite part of the movie was the final act, the big climatic conclusion. I do not want to get into the details of how this is going because I do not want to mess up for you in case you would not have seen it because a lot of interesting things are happening, but if you've seen it, you know exactly what I'm talking about.
The final battle sequence has filled me with joy and happiness. Yeah, maybe I did not really care about Billy Batson / Shazam! almost all through the movie, but the end of the movie brought everything home and set up a story for the upcoming episodes that I will be delighted to see.
Did I love Billy Baston at the end of the movie? Yes. But I have always loved the other characters in the film's host family and look forward to seeing their story continue in the future.
If you saw the movie, tell us what you thought about it!
