While most 16-year-olds wonder about the fate of their lives, Asher Angel knows what he wants to do since the age of five.

It's at this age that he debuted in a short film called Jolene, titled by Jessica Chastain. He followed this with more than a few theatrical productions.

Asher auditioned and won the role of Jonah Beck in the Disney Channel 2017 television series Andi Mack. He also began a musical career during which he toured the United States last year.

This month, he makes his debut on the big screen via the DC Comics superhero movie. Shazam!, sharing the lead role with Zachary Levi. (Read our review here.)

In an email interview, the Arizona-born teenager admitted that he was working so much that he had not been pausing for a while. But that does not bother him at all. "When we do what we like, we never get old, we never feel like we're working," he explained. "It's hard to find break time, but when I like it, I like spending time with my friends, going to the movies, playing basketball and just being a 16-year-old kid."

As for how he immediately knew that the acting profession was his career, he said, "My mother was an actress and I think it had a lot to do with (my decision). "I just remember going with my family to the community children's theater and watching a play.

"When everything was finished, I told my parents that it looked fun and that I wanted to try it. This was the real beginning for me. This has sparked my creativity and my pbadion, and I have not stopped since. "

Just say the word

Although Asher was not a fan of comics – "because I was not exposed to the genre … but I am now!" – he wanted to audition for a role in Shazam! he found the plot of the film compelling and different from other superhero stories.

As soon as he learned the role, he went to the comic book store with his father and "bought all the content we could (on Shazam!) so that I can dive deep into the story. He named Batman, Superman and Shazam! like his current favorite cartoon characters.

In Shazam!Asher plays Billy Batson, a cynical 14-year-old foster child, who fled six foster homes as he searched for his real mother who had disappeared at the age of three. He was eventually placed with the Vasquez family, who raise other adopted children, including Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer).

One day, while he's taking the subway, Billy finds himself in a place called Rock Of Eternity where he meets a wizard who grants him super powers. All that the young person has to do is to pronounce the word "Shazam" (acronym of the Greek gods and heroes: Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles and Mercury) and Billy, who acquires powers, becomes in reality a super adult muscular (Levi).

The problem is that Billy does not know how to become an adult or a superhero, let alone fight a supervillain in the form of Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong). Fortunately, Freddy, a fan of superheroes, provides him with help on the front of superheroes and provides some of the humorous moments of the film.

Angel describes Shazam! like a funny action movie. "It's a superhero movie that meets Large. The clbadic realization of the dream where a 14-year-old boy is given the power to become an adult superhero. It will be an unforgettable tour in the narration with incredible visuals. I can not wait for it to go to the movies. "

Although Asher and Levi do not share any scenes in the film, the two actors spent time talking about the character and reviewing the script, especially when they met director David F. Sandberg (Annabelle: Creation) discovered some of Billy's ways.

In the film's production notes, Levi said, "We needed to find common ground to give both performances a similar essence. Billy has a sarcastic tendency, and we both understand well.

According to Asher, Levi is a person who is easy to talk to: "Zach is an incredible human being. His energy is contagious … He's just a really kind and caring person and a model that is easy to hope for and hope to be.

Asher is obviously delighted to be part of Shazam! and work on such a large-scale film. One thing he found different from the work on television – aside from larger sets and more people involved in a single project – is that he had to do his own stunts.

"My characters on TV never had to do stunt. It was very fun and I hope to do more in the future, "he exclaims.

Forge a path

Unlike Billy, who must grow up pretty quickly after getting super powers, Asher, who is the eldest of the three siblings, already thinks like a responsible person, with a clear idea of what he wants to achieve in his chosen field, constantly finding the means to raise himself.

The support of his parents is one of the factors that contributed to his way of keeping the mind smart: when Asher was chosen to play Andi Mack, the whole family moved to Utah, where the series was shot.

"My parents have been incredible in so many ways," Asher said. "They have always been above and beyond for all of us and that has not changed. They always remind us that they just want us to be happy and make decisions that we can all be proud of.

"My parents continue to expect the same from me."

Although he is turning to other artists like Justin Timberlake – who was also a child star and who has handled the glory very well – Asher already has the right attitude when it comes to working, despite his young age.

"I think the most important things that an actor should have, is self-confidence and a very strong work ethic.

"There is a lot of rejection in this case. If you are really invested, simply continue to be confident and ready for the next opportunity. "

Shazam! is currently being broadcast in GSC cinemas across the country.
