FREETOWN, Sierra Leone – The head of the Sierra Leone Football Federation has been acquitted for corruption, paving the way for FIFA to lift the international ban striking this country from West Africa. .
The president of the Sierra Leone Football Association, Isha Johansen, and the secretary general, Chris Kamara, were acquitted for lack of evidence nearly two years after the first indictment.
They had been accused by the government's anti-corruption commission of embezzling money and abusing power. FIFA said it was government interference in football, which the world organization does not allow.
FIFA suspended Sierra Leone from international football in October and the country was disqualified from the qualifying competition for the Africa Cup.
According to FIFA, Johansen and Kamara must be allowed to return to work before lifting the suspension.
