The President of Sierra Leone, Julius Maada Bio, has appointed a special commission to investigate allegations of widespread corruption and abuse of power under the government of his predecessor.
The commission, which will officially begin its work on February 4, is mandated to examine allegations of corruption as well as stolen public funds and state badets between 2007 and 2018 under President Ernest Bai's regime. Koroma.
"Corruption is a threat to national development," said Bio at a ceremony held Tuesday for the commission's inauguration.
"All those who will be invited by the commission must comply, anyone who does not comply … will face the full force of the law."
Bio took over the presidency after winning the second round of elections last April following a tumultuous campaign in which he targeted corruption.
"The commission of inquiry is not a witch hunt, but a democratic responsibility and a fight against impunity," said Justice Minister Priscilla Schwartz at the ceremony. launch.
Several former leaders have been arrested in recent months following the publication in July of a damning report that "widespread corruption" under the Koroma administration would have resulted in the "near-collapse" of the Economy of the West African nation.
Although Sierra Leone has enormous deposits of minerals and diamonds, the former British colony remains one of the poorest countries in the world and is only slowly recovering from years of war and disease.
