The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) arrested 18 foreign nationals at the Kucheni Time Checkpoint in Jirapa Municipality.

The suspects including 12 men and six women were arrested around 8.45am Friday morning.

They were on board a Yutong bus registered GC 5114 – Z going to Kumasi in the Ashanti region.

They understand; 11 Malian nationals, five Guineans, one Gambian and one Sierra Leonean aged between seven and 47 years old.

GIS Upper West Regional PRO Ibn Yussif Duranah Abdul-Mumin Seidu said in a media statement that the 18 foreign nationals entered the country via unapproved routes.

“The purpose of their visit includes business visits, family visits as well as medical care,” the statement added.

The suspects were handed over to the authorities of Burkina Faso after examination by the health authorities at the port of entry.

At approximately 8:45 a.m. this morning, vigilant immigration service personnel on duty at the Kucheni Time Checkpoint in Jirapa Municipality gathered some 18 foreign nationals aboard a Yutong bus registered as GC 5114 – Z traveling to Kumasi in the Ashanti region.

Our preliminary investigations revealed that they entered Ghana via unapproved routes. The purpose of their visit includes business visits, family visits as well as medical care.

The undocumented migrants arrested were made up of 11 Malian nationals, five Guineans, one Gambian and one Sierra Leone.

Their ages ranged from seven to 47 years old. They included 12 males and 6 females.

They were checked by the port’s health authorities before being handed over to the Burkinabè authorities on the other side of the border around 10:15 am at the Hamile border post.

It is important to note that while the staff of the Ghana Immigration Service are committed to containing the threat of irregular migration, we are also implementing the President’s directive on closing land borders.

With the full support of the Comptroller General of the Ghana Immigration Service, we are leaving no stone unturned in our determination to tackle illegal migration.
