Simon Sluga twice won the Croatian League Cup with Rijeka

Championship players Luton Town have signed Croatian goalkeeper Simon Sluga from Rijeka for a record amount of more than € 1.5m (£ 1.34m).

The 26-year-old has signed a three-year deal to break Luton's record of transfers for the first time since 1989, when he hired striker Lars Elstrup.

Sluga won the Croatian title in 2016-17 and was part of the Rijeka group that beat AC Milan in the Europa League 2017-18.

He won his first selection for the World Cup final against Tunisia last month.

"I am delighted to break the club record with the signing of a current Croatian international, which is essentially a second choice for the country, which was competing 12 months ago for a World Cup final," he said. Graeme Jones, Luton's coach, debuting the new season with a home game against Middlesbrough on Friday, August 2nd.

"He's an excellent footballer – an eleventh player for us – and he has a fantastic presence and great reflexes."

Sluga, who spent time in the Juventus Academy, played against Luton in a pre – season friendly game last summer and is in his fifth summer season.
