Singapore: chikungunya under contract with a student in Thailand

Fourteen people, 13 students and a teacher from the Singapore School of the Arts (SOTA) have contracted the viral infection transmitted by a mosquito, the chikungunya, in Thailand, according to a report from the Straits Times.

They were on a learning trip abroad in the Thai province of Ratchaburi.

After being treated at the provincial hospital, some students were transferred to a hospital in Bangkok where the diagnosis of chikungunya was made.

Thailand experienced an increase in chikungunya in 2019 with Report of the Office of Epidemiology 3,379 cases of chikungunya in 23 provinces until May 13th.

Chikungunya is a viral disease transmitted to humans by infected mosquitoes. It causes fever and severe joint pain, often debilitating. Other symptoms include muscle pain, headache, nausea, fatigue, and rashes.

The disease shares some clinical signs with dengue and Zika and can be misdiagnosed in areas where they are common. Since there is no cure, the treatment aims to relieve the symptoms.
