The Sinohydro Agreement will benefit each of Ghana's 16 regions, with hospital projects, extension of electricity in rural communities and construction of courts and residential buildings for the Judiciary, landfills and industrial parks.
The main project support, amounting to $ 2 billion, was agreed between Ghana and China in 2018 in order to address the major challenges in infrastructure in the country.
As part of the deal, Sinohydro Group Limited of China will supply the infrastructure chosen by the government in exchange for Ghana's refined bauxite.
The first phase of the project, costing $ 646.6 million, begins with the Tamale Interchange project.
The Phase 1 projects approved by Parliament are:
Lot 1 – Construction of roads in downtown Accra. Eighty-four (84) kilometers of roads in Trobu, Anyaa-Sowutum, Dome-Kwabenya, Adenta and Teshie will be constructed;
Lot 2 – Construction of Kumasi and Mampong Inner City Roads. A total of one hundred (100) kilometers of downtown roads will be built in Kumasi and Mampong. In Kumasi, the relevant road networks are in Manhyia, Suame, Tafo Pankrono, Asokwa, Kwadaso, Oforikrom, Subin, Nhyiaeso and Bantama;
Lot 3 – construction of the Tamale Interchange;
Lot 4 – Construction of the PTC roundabout interchange at Sekondi-Takoradi, the first interchange located in the west of the country;
Lot 5 – Dualization of the Adenta-Dodowa road. Fourteen (14) kilometers of the Adenta-Dodowa road will be doubled to reduce congestion, improve road safety and reduce travel times in the corridor;
Lot 6 – Construction of roads in downtown Sunyani and Canton Berekum. A total of thirty-nine (39) kilometers of roads will be built in the Sunyani and Berekum townships. In Sunyani, twenty-nine (29) kilometers of downtown roads will be built, while the township of Berekum will build ten (10).
Lot 7 – Road construction in Prestea Township and downtown Cape Coast. Thirty-two (32) kilometers of roads will be built at Cape Coast and Prestea. In Cape Coast, twenty-two (22) kilometers of downtown roads will be constructed, while the Township of Prestea will build ten (10).
Lot 8 – Improvement of certain feeder roads in the Ashanti and West regions. Sixty-eight (68) kilometers of feeder roads in the Ashanti and North West regions will be rehabilitated. Roads that will be rehabilitated are mainly in communities with bauxite deposits;
Lot 9 – Rehabilitation of Akim Oda-Ofoase Road. This lot includes the rehabilitation of the 38 km Akim Oda-Ofoase Road, which is part of the IR3 national road network and runs through several rural communities linking Akim Oda to Ofoase;
Lot 10 – Construction of the Hohoe-Jasikan-Dodo Pepesu Road of the East Corridor. This will involve the construction of the sixty-six (66) kilometer section of the east corridor road between Hohoe to Jasikan and Dodo Pepesu;
As part of Phase 2 of the Sinohydro Agreement, which will come into effect after Parliament's approval, 1,300 kilometers of roads, 3 interchanges and 69 additional steel bridges will be built, for an estimated $ 850 million. .
