Following his death, the Minister of Health, KK Shailaja, issued a special directive to the Director of Public Health to strengthen prevention activities in Malappuram. She added that there was no need to panic because the virus, which is transmitted by Culex mosquitoes, did not spread into the community.
"A special medical team has visited the area and health officials have taken steps to prevent the spread of the disease in the region. A directive has been issued to set up a treatment center to observe and monitor patients who come to hospitals and have symptoms of West Nile fever, "she said.
After the case was reported 10 days ago, the district health administration had issued an alert. A central health team visited AR Nagar on Friday and Saturday and collected mosquito and bird samples.
Dr K Sakeena, District Medical Officer, said samples had been sent to the National Institute of Virology in Pune and the results would be available soon.
Officials also collected samples from Venniyur where the boy stayed the first week of February. Birds being the natural hosts of the virus, veterinary authorities have urged the population to report bird deaths in the region.
Malappuram collector Amit Meena said the situation was under control. "We have asked local authorities, hospitals and health authorities to take preventive measures," he said.
At a meeting convened Monday, the collector decided to form special squads in all districts of the district to prevent the outbreak of communicable diseases.
A mega medical camp will also be organized to detect communicable diseases among migrant workers in the district. No interpersonal transmission of the disease by casual contact has been documented to date.
