Those who smelled cookies and pizzas for less than 30 seconds were in dire need and were more likely to choose such foods. But those who inhaled that greasy smell for two minutes ended up choosing more strawberries and apples.
The fruit has an odor. But in modern society, it is not usually connected to the reward centers of our brain. This is the reason why it has little impact to force us to make a purchase.
