A snake broke into the room of a southwestern parliament building in Nigeria, sending lawmakers behind and forcing an indefinite break, officials said Friday.
"When we were about to enter plenary, a big snake escaped from the room, which disrupted our session and we had to leave the room in a hurry," Olugbenga Omole said. spokesman of the state legislator of Ondo.
The snake seems to have fallen from the roof into the plenary room. He did not bite anyone until he was caught and killed by Parliament staff, Omole said.
He blamed the incident in the dilapidated state of the badembly due to lack of funds and late maintenance.
"This room is safer for legislative work and because of this, we have decided to suspend the meeting for an indefinite period and the meeting will be suspended for an indefinite period," said Mr. Omole.
He added that the legislators would not return until the end of fumigation of the complex.
It was the first time that a snake appeared in the workshop, although there have been complaints of rodents and reptiles in the bushes around the complex.
Omole did not specify what type of snake had caused the disruption on Thursday.
Nigeria has many snakes, including venomous vipers, spitting cobras and buntings.
According to a study published in 2001 in the African Journal of Medicine and Medical Sciences, nearly 500 people per 100,000 people are bitten by snakes in Nigeria on average per year.

Most people get stung while working in agriculture, livestock or during walks in wooded areas. In Nigeria, less than 10% of snake bite victims use a hospital for treatment.
