‘SNL’ Cold Open tackles weird Super Bowl ad politics

One of the many takeaways from our grim 366-day sprint to 2020 (f * ck you, Leap Year!) Is that advertisers don’t know where the dividing line is. We’re not even four years from Pepsi’s horrific Kendall Jenner ad and brands still weigh down ads with performative positions along political, social, and cultural lines.

This is one of the great punchlines of Saturday Night LiveThe NFL’s latest cold open sketch, which takes place in the middle of an NFL pre-game show. There’s the cracker ad, which celebrates black history before it ends: “We always have to fight for equality. And we always have to reach for Cheez-Its.” Meanwhile, a follow-up ad for pizza chain Papa John’s meant to portray conservative viewers references Pizzagate and not so subtly endorsing QAnon.

The other strong point of the cold start is Aidy Bryant, who serves a dual role as Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid and Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians. The sketch openly acknowledges this and seems to suggest that Reid and Arians are, in fact, the same person.
