Soccer-Resurgent Valencia inflicts a ninth Liga defeat at Real Madrid

VALENCIA, APRIL 3 (Reuters) – Real Madrid's campaign continued after a ninth Liga defeat and the first victory since coach Zinedine Zidane returned 2-1 to Valencia on Wednesday.

The Portuguese international Goncalo Guedes gave the advantage to Valencia in the 35th minute with a powerful shot from inside the area, too powerful for Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas.

Madrid played well until conceding, but lost momentum after the goal and Valencia continued to threaten in the second half, eventually doubling their lead with a header from defender Ezequiel Garay on a corner in 83rd.

Karim Benzema scored a consolation goal for Madrid, shortly after Zidane's team overturned the penalty decision after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) player decided that Sergio Ramos was offside.

Valencia, which reached the final of the Copa del Rey and the quarter-finals of the Europa League, has qualified for the Champions League after climbing to fifth place with 46 points, one behind Getafe, fourth.

Madrid is stuck in third position with 57 points, 13 behind Barcelona and 5 behind Atletico Madrid. (Report by Richard Martin edited by Toby Davis)
