There are limited changes to the Socceroos squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Oman and Japan with just two additions, while defenseman Brad Smith is out due to COVID-19.
Australian coach Arnold confirmed Smith tested positive for the virus, but was asymptomatic, before boarding a flight to Qatar, meaning green and gold selected just 25 players for the next matches against Oman (October 8) in Doha and Japan (October 12) at Saitama Stadium.
Melbourne Victory striker Chris Ikonomidis has been brought into the squad – Australia’s second alongside Rhyan Grant – while right-back Fran Karacic returns after missing the last two games with injury.

“I’m very happy with the squad we will have with us in Qatar and Japan for our next two matches. A lot of the boys will have exceptional club form in the camp, and the fact that we will be together again so few time after september window will allow us to quickly reconnect and build on what we have been working on during the time we spent together last month.
“We continue to discuss quarantine options with the government for national team players and staff returning from overseas after representing Australia. As a coach, I hope these exchanges progress positively. so that we can consider selecting more representatives from the A-League Men for future teams. “
Australia have won 10 consecutive matches in World Cup qualifying, including the first two of the third leg, leaving the green and gold lead in Group B alongside Saudi Arabia,
Following the games against Oman and Japan, the Socceroos will have two more World Cup qualifiers against Saudi Arabia and China in November, in hopes that the Saudi game can be played in front of Australian fans.
