Compliance with social distancing against the spread of the coronavirus has not been enforced in cells at Sunyani Central Prison (SCP) due to the overcrowding of inmates.
Ghana Prison Service (GPS) Bono’s regional public relations officer, Deputy Superintendent of Prisons (DSP) Johann Nii Narh Nartey, told the Ghanaian News Agency (GNA) in an interview.
DSP Nartey said the male cells that were supposed to house around 450 inmates now house 880 inmates, but the situation in the female cells is totally different as the prison population is less than 20.
According to him, in addition to the challenge of social distancing, the authority of the SCP with the support of the local Covid -19 management team was doing everything possible to ensure compliance with security protocols among inmates and officers in order to prevent spread and infection instead.
DSP Nartey said each inmate received three washable nasal masks and there was an immediate replacement of a lost or destroyed nasal mask to protect inmates from harm.
He said the prison cells had been disinfected by Zoomlion Ghana Limited, a sanitation company, and assured that the disinfection would continue periodically.
DSP Nartey said the temperatures of the new detainees were read before their entry and were also isolated in a quarantine cell for two weeks under the supervision of health personnel.
However, he added that the quarantine cell also had an isolation block where those who fell ill were admitted for treatment.
He said skin diseases were common among inmates and appealed to drug companies and pharmaceutical wholesale and retail stores to donate drugs to the Service for save the lives of some inmates.
DSP Nartey appealed to philanthropists and benevolent organizations to assist the SCP with tissues, hand gloves, soaps, disinfectants and detergents.
