Social Media Users Express Opposing Views on Shatta Wale’s ‘Fix Yourself’ Comment

Ghanaian social media users have expressed opposing views on the Reggae / Dancehall artist, Shatta Wale’s description of #FixTheCountry activists as “educated fools and disappointed graduates”.

According to born artist Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., young people campaigning for a fixed country should instead mend themselves. He then described them as “cheap thinkers”.

He added that shouting “fix the country” on social media as Ghanaians are being killed on the streets will not produce any desired change.

But these comments from the president of the Shatta Movement (SM) were not greeted lightly by dozens on social media. Those who disagree with the comment argue that the artist has no basis for criticizing the medium used by Ghanaians to demand accountability.

However, others believe Shatta Wale is correct in suggesting a different approach for young Ghanaians to stand up and fight for their rights.

In recent months, Ghanaian youth have taken to social media to demand accountability, good governance and better living conditions from the government.

#FixTheCountry has garnered huge support since activists, mostly young people, highlighted some of the country’s shortcomings.

However, a certain Ibrahim Mohammed, a social activist was assaulted on Saturday in Ejura by two unknown assailants in front of his residence. Known to many as Kaaka, the social activist died at Komfo Anokye University Hospital (KATH) on Monday.

Two men suspected of being bodyguards for MCE d’Ejura were arrested by police to help with ongoing investigations.

Kaaka’s death led young Ejura to take to the streets to seek justice, but the protest unfortunately left two dead and four injured after clashes between protesters and the military.

So far, the Ashanti Regional Police Command has said it has opened investigations into the circumstances that led to the deaths of two Ejura residents.
