MANCHESTER UNITED's boss, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has introduced a brutal training regime while asking his players to counter-attack kings next season.

Old Trafford's manager focused on running during his team's pre-season tour in Perth, allowing his men one day off each week.

Solskjaer thinks that United's failure to qualify for the Champions League last season is due to a lack of physical fitness and the inability to counterattack.

As a result, explosive speed drills were put in place during training, in addition to running.

According to ESPN, such an approach is not very popular internally, foreign players in particular denouncing Solskjaer's vision as being "too British" and claiming that his training is simply "running, running".

Solskjaer believes that a targeted pre-season diet will produce a team that will be in good shape to start the match against Chelsea on August 11th.

He said: "It's not a matter of breaking them down, it's not a matter of proving a point, they're not fit enough.

"We are here to build them, that's where we are. When the league begins, everyone should be in as good shape as possible.

"When I arrived, I was criticized for playing too often with the same team and for being too hard on it.

"That we asked them to run more and we ended up with some injuries, so maybe I should have done a rotation."

United's sports science team, led by Rich Hawkins, head coach, has increased workload by 50% in the second week of pre-season against Jose Mourinho.

Marcus Rashford said, "We have worked harder than ever to try to fix things.

"The sessions have been pretty tough, but to be honest, I think that's what we need, and if we compare it to the same time last year, we're in a much better shape."

United even trained on the day of their 2-0 win against Perth Glory and finished 14 practice sessions during their nine-day tour of Australia.
