The Coalition for the Ghana Education Campaign (GNECC) wants the Ministry of Education to put in place the necessary structures before implementing a new curriculum for basic schools.
GNECC Executive Chairman Kofi Asare says some fundamental issues, such as small clbad sizes and inadequate infrastructure, need to be addressed first before the new program is put in place.
The new program that was handed over Monday to the Ghana Education Service by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) focuses on literacy, numeracy and numeracy. creative thinking in early childhood education in primary schools [Kindergarten to Primary 6].
Although pilot tests have been conducted to test the viability of the program, Kofi Asare fears that the desired results will be achieved if infrastructural and systemic challenges are not urgently addressed.
"A policy is as valuable as its framework and its implementation provisions … The program is supposed to be child-centered and participatory. For such a strategy to work, the size of the clbad should not exceed 35, but the size of our clbades is currently important. For this new program to work, we need to decongest our clbadrooms so that teachers can apply the right teaching methods, "he said.
The new program is expected to come into effect from September 2019.
The country is in the process of revising its education policy and curriculum to bring it up to modern standards by making teaching and learning more effective.
In her state of the nation, President Nana Akufo-Addo said the new program will better prepare students to meet global challenges.
He added that the new program would aim to make Ghanaian children confident, innovative, creative thinkers, literate and complete patriotic citizens.
"Mathematics, science, reading, writing and creativity are therefore at the heart of this new program," he said.
