Somalia’s President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has called for a meeting in the capital, Mogadishu, to deliberate on the election stalemate.
The proposed two-day meeting will be held Thursday and Friday.
Opposition leaders called for protests against the government’s failure to hold elections.
The protests are scheduled for Friday in Mogadishu.
The president’s office tweeted that Thursday’s meeting will focus on the September 17 election deal:
HE President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo convenes a two-day Leadership Consultative Summit to be held in #Mogadishu February 18-19, 2021. The federal government, federal member states and the administration of Benadir will discuss the September 17, 2020 electoral agreement.

Somalia missed the December 2020 deadline for elections and the president’s term ended in February 2021.
A parliament resolution allows the president to remain in office until a successor is elected, but the opposition has accused him of illegally clinging to power.
The September 2020 agreement between the federal government and regional leaders approved an indirect election model for legislative and presidential elections.
