Some MPs come to Parliament by uber, we deserve better than a $ 28million car loan – South Dayi MP

The member for South Dayi supported the draft $ 28 million auto loan agreement presented to Parliament by the Department of Finance.

Speaking to JoyNews on Wednesday, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor revealed that some MPs are going to Parliament on super rides, which is worrying and dangerous.

Arguing for the deal, lawmakers insisted that MPs deserve better than the $ 28 million car loan they are given to buy vehicles; and should instead receive official cars like state officials.

“Check the service record of the election commissioner.” She has about 5 military officers following her in two land cruisers. She holds a Section 71 office. She received neither money nor loans to purchase these vehicles. I don’t have five soldiers following me.

“The Supreme Court justices have land cruisers, they haven’t had any loans to buy their land cruisers. Ministers of State have land cruisers or official vehicles. Yesterday, you saw in the newspapers that another facility is taken by the executive to acquire official vehicles for members of the Council of State.

“The deputies are the only category of holders of article 71 not to have an official vehicle. So if the deal is to give us a loan to buy official vehicles, I think that’s very wrong. My position is that the government should take action and provide us with official vehicles to perform the functions of our office over the next four years as is done for all other categories, ”he told Joseph Opoku on Wednesday. His comment follows calls from deputy chairman of the parliamentary finance committee, Patrick Yaw Boamah, who urges MPs to reject the $ 28 million loan.

Addressing the House, Deputy Finance Minister Abena Osei Asare said the $ 28 million medium-term loan was to be repaid by members during their four-year tenure as MPs.

Another request for a car loan of 3.5 million dollars to the members of the 8th State Council for the purchase of vehicles was also made.

Mr Boamah, unhappy with the demand, suggested the government should instead consider buying cars from MPs for their official duties and handing them over to their successors when they leave Parliament.

But the South Dayi MP said that in the absence of official vehicles, MPs deserve the loan.

He says, “This is not to dismiss it, as we speak we have been in office for seven months and our colleagues who are new and have not had the benefit of having solid vehicles come in. this room with uber and it is very dangerous.

“The arrangement can be bad and for me it is bad but I cannot say because it is bad if there are no other alternatives, I will not accept it”, he said. -he adds.

Meanwhile, the $ 28 million car loan deal has since come under scrutiny by some Ghanaians who argue that purchasing vehicles for MPs is not the need of the average Ghanaian.

Reacting to this, Mr. Dafeamekpor noted that the public reaction following obtaining the loans is unfair since the funds will be repaid by the MPs.

“It’s offensive, it attracts very offensive comments from MPs and it’s unfair. What is annoying is that these vehicles do not belong to the deputies during the term of the loan. You only have the vehicle transferred to your name after you have finished paying the loan, ”he explained.
