The report, which quotes former employees as sources, says several Snapchat employees abused their access a few years ago. According to them, Snapchat has internal tools allowing employees to access user information, such as their location, recorded snapshots and other personal information.
One of the tools, dubbed SnapLion, was developed so that Snap could access user information in the event of a request from law enforcement. This makes sense because we are sure that many other companies also have the ability to access user information, but in this case, the report claims that some employees have abused it.
In a statement provided to the motherboard, Snap said: "The protection of privacy is paramount at Snap. We keep very little user data and we have robust policies and controls to limit internal access to the data we have. Any unauthorized access of any type constitutes a flagrant violation of the company's standards of conduct and, if detected, results in immediate termination of the contract. "
