President Akufo-Addo
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said that if the two main political parties – the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in power and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the main opposition party, would meet to implement the legislation to dissolve them himself.
The President therefore called on the leaders of the NPP and NDC to meet on this issue and to voluntarily dissolve all self-defense groups affiliated with them.
In her third speech on the state of the nation in parliament on Thursday, February 21, 2019, Nana Akufo-Addo said: "I wish to make a sincere and pbadionate appeal to the leaders of the two main political parties of our country – NPP and NDC – get together as soon as possible, preferably next week, to agree appropriate measures to put an end to this worrying and unacceptable phenomenon of vigilance in our body politic.
"Mr President, I have asked the leaders of the NPP to invite the leaders of the NDC to participate in such a meeting. The security services of the country will be ready to attend such a meeting. If voluntary dismantling by the parties is not possible, I will propose a law in this area. "
Mr. Akufo-Addo's intervention follows calls by Ghanaian police, religious leaders, civil society organizations and Ghanaians in general for the NPP and NDC to dissolve their self-defense groups.
While invincible forces and delta forces were linked to the NPP, the Hawks, Lions and dragons were linked to the NDC.
These groups, made up of well armed armed men, have over the years visited the chaos of ordinary citizens in the name of protecting the ballot box in elections.
They also engage in acts of violence in order to get what they believe they deserve, as promised by politicians.
