NEW YORK – Automaker Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and French automaker Renault are discussing a possible alliance, as both companies seek to address the industry's technological and regulatory challenges.

A person familiar with the case confirmed the advanced discussions, reported for the first time by the Financial Times. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the negotiations were not made public.

For months, Fiat Chrysler is the subject of speculation on mergers. PSA Peugeot would also be interested in an alliance.

Fiat Chrysler chief executive Mike Manley told badysts earlier this month that he expects future consolidation of the sector in the near term.

Negotiations are taking place as Renault seeks a solution in its partnership with Nissan and Mitsubishi, which has collapsed since the arrest of former Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn in Japan.
