A South African commission charged with investigating corruption during Jacob Zuma’s presidency has criticized his decision not to obey the summons to appear later this month.
The commission, known as the Zondo commission, called Mr. Zuma’s decision “totally unacceptable”.
Zuma is due to appear before the commission from February 15-19, but said on Monday he would rather go to jail than obey the summons.
Her challenge follows a constitutional court order last week requiring her to appear before the commission.
“It seems that Mr. Zuma considers himself above the law and the Constitution. The Commission reaffirms that in terms of the Constitution everyone is equal before the law, ”the Zondo commission said in a statement.
He added that he would announce the measures he would take if Mr. Zuma did not appear before him.
The commission was established in 2018 to investigate the “state capture” scandal during Mr. Zuma’s tenure as president.
The scandal revolves around allegations that the wealthy Gupta family, who are close friends of the former president, used their relationship to unfairly secure millions of dollars in government contracts.
It is also alleged that they may have influenced political decisions, including the appointment of ministers.
The former president and the Gupta family deny any wrongdoing.
Mr. Zuma previously said the commission was biased against him.
