Recognizing that mental illness is increasingly becoming a global epidemic, the Gauteng Ministry of Health has allocated 1.4 billion rand to psychiatric hospitals in the province.
In his vote on the budget in the Legislative Assembly of Gauteng Province, Bandile Masuku, a member of the health committee, said he was determined to provide quality mental health care.
Of the R1.4 billion, Rs 347 million has been redefined in the district health services to meet mental health care needs, of which R202 million would be provided to health partners. 39, NGO, added Masuku.
"We have decided that the best approach to tackle the mental health epidemic is the SANAC approach, which involves civil society, businesses, workers and other sectors."
Presenting his vote on the budget, Masuku said that the total allocation for the 2019/2020 fiscal year would be 50.8 billion rand.
Infrastructure
More than $ 1 billion would be spent on maintenance and renovation of health facilities in Gauteng, he added.
"Health infrastructures are part of society's social badets and are therefore important for eliminating badet poverty among our population.
"Some of these resources will be directed to the 10 hospitals needing urgent improvements."
Masuku said additional resources would be needed to improve health care in Bheki Mlangeni, Jubilee, Mamelodi, Tembisa, Tambo Memorial, Edenvale, Dr. George Mukhari, Kopanong, Sebokeng and Thelle Mogoerane hospitals.
"The selection of these hospitals is not based solely on the worst performance, but also on the potential of what an integrated, innovative and responsive health system can do in Gauteng."
Emergency medical services
Masuku also announced that R49m had been allocated for fleet maintenance as well as for monitoring and improving security features.
"Emergency medical care is an important health care provision that provides the public with timely medical care and facilitates the access of our health facilities to the indigent free of charge.
"In addition, the provincialization of emergency medical services for Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni is proceeding as planned, again aimed at ensuring increased efficiency and cost reduction in the system."

Masuku said that 1,974 positions would be filled during the current fiscal year with an allocation of 778 million rand.
"This amount also includes subsidies for the extended public works program.
"To improve governance and achieve better clinical results, we need the right skills in the right quantities, and while staffing our facilities is a fast-moving target, we are committed to meeting expectations."
